Since I wasn’t there and coaches can be biased when evaluating their teams, what happened Friday night to turn the Etiwanda at Phelan Serrano game into such a route?
Serrano was ranked No. 8 in the Eastern Division coaches’ preseason poll, Etiwanda was No. 6 in the presumably stronger Inland Division, but it was host Serrano who rolled to a 33-6 victory.
Etiwanda receiver Marvin Jones, one of the top-rated pass catchers on the West Coast, had eight receptions for 111 yards and the lone touchdown, but looks like he was a one-man band for the Eagles.
The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, spread the ball among eight ball-carriers, and quarterback Will Dyer performed solidly when asked to throw.
Etiwanda Coach Steve Bryce said afterward he would have preferred coming into the game as the underdog because his team grew overconfident because of its ranking.
I’m guessing it was the coaches who brought up the rankings in the first place. Teenagers aren’t interested in those things.
