Motorola’s new Droid X2 smartphone is set to go on sale online Thursday for $200 through Verizon Wireless.
And for those who want to grab the sequel to the original Droid X, ordering online will be the only option for at least a few days, as the Droid X2 won’t hit Verizon retail stores until about May 26, said Kira Golin, a Motorola spokeswoman.
The Droid X2 will replace the Droid X, which launched in July, as the big brother in Motorola’s Droid line. The original Droid X offered a larger 4.3-inch screen compared to the Droid and Droid 2’s 3.7-inch screens -- and that isn’t changing in the new model.
But while the 4.3-inch screen size for the Droid X2 is the same as the Droid X, the new phone’s display will offer 26% more pixels than the first model, for a sharper picture and a wider on-screen keyboard.
The Droid X2 will also be the first Verizon phone to both run on dual-core 1GHz processor and offer ‘full display mirroring’ which will allow users to plug the smartphone into a high definition television via an HDMI cable to watch on their TV sets what’s also on their phone, Motorola said.
The new phone will also feature an 8-megapixel camera in the rear, same as the original Droid X, for photos and video.
On launch day, the Droid X2 will run on Google’s Android 2.2 Froyo, but Motorola said the phone will be updated wirelessly to Android 2.3 Gingerbread at a later date.
