Dodgers right fielder Andre Ethier will be starting in center field for the National League in Tuesday’s All-Star Game, Manager Charlie Manuel announced. Asked why he decided to start Ethier in center, Manuel mumbled something unintelligible about the voting process, the lack of a center fielder on the NL roster and how Ethier has played the position.
Couple of problems: First, Ethier was first in player voting and second in fan voting among NL outfielders. Corey Hart, who is starting in right field, wasn’t in the top three in fan voting and earned in a place in the starting lineup as a replacement for sidelined Jason Heyward. Second, Ethier has never played center field, at least in the majors.
