NEW YORK -- By the afternoon, the scene on 49th Street was positively festive. A horn trio oompahed Dixieland tunes as writers milled about, embracing one another in greeting.
The number of strikers had swelled so large -- well over 100 -- that the crowd inside the barricades could not move. A WGA organizer tried in vain to get those assembled marching again, telling people to line up in groups of four across instead of in pairs.
‘OK -- 1, 2, 3, move!’ she shouted through a tinny megaphone. There was some half-hearted shuffling, but the circle of strikers largely stayed put.
