Among the many Earth Day items that came across our desk was this one from the National Resources Defense Council, which is giving out some Growing Green awards for sustainable-food contributions.
The award selection panel is chaired by Michael Pollan, author of the bestselling ‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma.’ “While food is an essential part of our day-to-day lives, most Americans are unaware that climate change and our food system are inextricably linked,” he says.
The panel picked nine finalists, and the winners will be announced in early May. Here’s a list of them, three in each of three categories:
Food producer: Will Allen of Growing Power, Milwaukee; Judith Redmond of Full Belly Farm, Guinda, Calif.; Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm, Swoope, Va.
Business leader: Fedele Bauccio of Bon Appétit Management Co., Palo Alto; Michael Rozyne of Red Tomato, Canton, Mass.; Thaleon Tremain, Pachamama Coffee Coop, Davis.
Thought leader: Ann Cooper of Berkeley Unified School District, Berkeley; James Harvie of Institute for a Sustainable Future, Duluth, Minn.; Sibella Kraus of Sustainable Agriculture Education, Berkeley.
