College Roundup: Vanguard sweeps Simpson

Doubleheader
Host Vanguard University earned a pair of walk-off wins in nonconference play against Simpson on Wednesday.
The No. 17-ranked Lions (27-7) scored both winning runs without a hit.
In the first game, Kaitlin Estes drove in the game-winner with a bases-loaded groundout to help Vanessa Dwyer earn the complete-game victory and improve to 12-3.
Morgan Pilbin was one for two with one RBI for the Lions.
In Game 2, Summer Penner reached on a fielder’s choice to plate the game’s only run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Courtney Thornhill went the distance, allowing six hits to lower her earned-run average to 1.09. She is now 10-3.
Vanguard had just two hits in the second game.
No. 14-ranked Simpson is 19-7.
BASEBALL
Santa Ana 4, Golden West 3
The host Rustlers fell to 12-11, 4-4 in conference Thursday and remain tied for third with Cypress in the Orange Empire Conference.
Santa Ana is 17-7, 3-5.
