College Roundup: UCI falls to Long Beach State

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Long Beach State 68, UC Irvine 63

Senior Shareen Sutherland had 23 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots to lead the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Sutherland made 10 of 16 field-goal attempts and three of four foul shots to help UCI (3-19, 1-7 in conference) shoot 50% from the field.

UCI also made eight of 16 three-point attempts, as sophomore Andee Ritter was four for eight and senior Mckenzie Piper was two for two.

Piper finished with 13 points and Ritter had 12, while senior Irene Chavez had seven points and five assists for UCI.

Long Beach State is 16-8, 7-2.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University split a pair of nonconference games with Biola on Saturday.

The No. 20-ranked Lions lost the first game, 4-3, but won the second, 13-3.

In the Vanguard win, Tanner Perry was three for four, while Trai Patrick, who homered, and Shane Ellias-Calles drove in three runs apiece.

Sam Neufeld was two for two with two RBIs and three runs for Vanguard in the Lions’ win, in which Brock Eissman and Josh Weeks also had two hits each in a 14-hit attack.

Sophomore Tyler Steele earned the pitching victory for Vanguard (5-3).

Biola is 5-1.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University earned a nonconference split with Claremont Mudd Scripps, bouncing back from a 2-1 loss in 10 innings to claim a 6-1 triumph on Saturday.

Emily Hall drove in two runs in the victory in which Vanessa Dwyer allowed four hits and no earned runs in seven innings.

In the opening game, Summer Penner was two for three to lead Vanguard’s four-hit attack.

The Lions are 2-1.

Claremont Mudd Scripps is 1-1.
