Vanguard 1, Biola 0

LA MIRADA — Senior midfielder Alex Bachman scored an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute to lift the No. 7-ranked and top-seeded Lions in the final of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday night.

It was the fourth goal of the season for Bachman, who now shares the team lead with three game-winners.

Vanguard (16-3), the regular-season conference champion, avenged its only conference loss, a 1-0 setback top the Eagles on Oct. 1.

No. 8-ranked and No. 2-seeded Biola absorbed its first loss to fall to 15-1-2.

Vanguard will open the NAIA Tournament on Nov. 19 at home. The first-round winners advance to the final-site bracket, Nov. 28-Dec. 3 at Orange Beach, Ala.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Southern California Championship

Host Golden West rolled to the title, defeating Long Beach, 16-5, after trouncing Riverside, 13-7, in the semifinals on Saturday.

In the final, Peter Lovas and James Smith had three goals apiece to lead the Rustlers (29-0), who compete in the state tournament, Friday and Saturday at Los Positas College in Livermore.

Lovas had four goals, one assist and five steals against Riverside, against which Smith and Ben Morrison added two goals apiece.

Sid Dymond had nine saves for the Rustlers in the semifinal.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 92, La Verne 46

Senior Clair Lamunu made 10 of 11 field-goal tries to produce 22 points and 10 rebounds for the host Lions in the nonconference game Saturday.

Christiana Gerostergiou had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Kandyce Smith had 13 points, four assists and four rebounds for the winners (2-0).

Alyssa Durr had 13 points for No. 6-ranked Vanguard, which posted a 42-22 rebounding advantage and won the turnover battle, 28-8.

Orange Coast 77, Citrus 46

SAN JACINTO — Sophomore Michelle Wu had 16 points to lead the Pirates in the consolation bracket of the Mt. San Jacinto Tournament on Saturday.

Megan Lewis and Megan McCullough had nine points apiece, while Aubriona Mathis had six points and seven rebounds and Chaynn Pendergrass chipped in six points, five rebounds and four assists.

OCC improved to 1-1.

Citrus is 1-4.

Southern California Championships

Golden West College defeated Fullerton, 6-5, in the third-place game, after falling to Santa Barbara, 10-9, in overtime in the semifinals on Saturday at Golden West.

Riley Beemer and Evelyn Wang had two goals apiece for the Rustlers (24-6) against Fullerton.

Loyola Marymount 99, Vanguard 51

LOS ANGELES — Jamaal Lee had 12 points and Zach Allmon contributed eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to lead the visiting Lions in a game that was an exhibition for them on Friday.

The Lions were five for 35 from the field in the second half (14.3%) and made just four of 32 three-point attempts (12.5%) and were bested, 59-36, in the rebounding department.
