High School Roundup: Local athletes qualify for finals

CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries

MOORPARK — Newport Harbor’s Cole Smith qualified first in the shotput with a heave of 58 feet, 10 inches at Moorpark High on Saturday.

Smith is one of two Sailors who advanced to the CIF Southern Section finals at Cerritos College next Saturday. The other is Michael Jarboe, who was the fourth qualifier in the shotput (54-8).

Mark Field ran a personal-best time of 4 minutes 19.79 seconds in the 1,600 meters, good enough for 10th and an alternate spot.

Alexis Garcia ran the 3,200 in 9:32.52 and finished 11th. He is the second alternate.

CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries

Corona del Mar’s Austin Baxter qualified sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 39.69 seconds at Jim Scott Stadium on Saturday, earning a spot in the CIF Southern Section finals.

Leif Hellgren was fifth in the 3,200, running it in 9:29.71 and qualifying for the finals.

CIF Southern Section Division 4 preliminaries

CARPINTERIA — Sage Hill’s Chance Kuehnel qualified first in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.19 seconds, placed second in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet 2 inches and took fourth in the long jump with a mark of 21-1¼ at Carpinteria High on Saturday.

Kuehnel advanced in each of the three events to CIF Southern Section finals next week at Cerritos College.

Sage Hill’s other two qualifiers were pole vaulter Alex Escalera (first, 12-0) and long jumper Miles McCord (fifth, (21-0¾).

CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries

MOORPARK — Newport Harbor’s Emma Kratzberg won the 300-meter hurdles in 42.56 seconds and placed third in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.42 at Moorpark High on Saturday, qualifying for next week’s CIF Southern Section finals in both events.

Grace Clemence was seventh in the pole vault with a 10-feet 6-inch effort. She advanced to the CIF Southern Section finals, which take place next Saturday at Cerritos College.

CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries

Corona del Mar’s Raquel Powers finished third in the 1,600 in 5 minutes 7.74 seconds and fourth in the 3,200 in 11:04.9 at Jim Scott Stadium on Saturday, advancing to the CIF Southern Section finals in both events.

Costa Mesa’s Felicia Crenshaw placed third in the discus throw with a mark of 135 feet 8 inches and moved on to next Saturday’s finals at Cerritos College. CdM’s Amanda Cooper took sixth in the event with throw of 126-6.

Costa Mesa’s Paige LaBare advanced to the finals with seventh-place showings in the 100 (12.20) and 200 (25.46) events.
