College Roundup: UCI edges Seattle

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 3, Seattle 2

A bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Parker Coss with no outs in the ninth inning gave the host Anteaters a walk-off nonconference win Saturday.

UCI (13-6), which clinched the series win with a 2-0 mark, scored twice on a squeeze bunt by Cameron Bishop in the fourth.

Jonathan Munoz was two for three with two doubles and one run to pace the Anteaters.

Calvin Faucher, who struck out two to end the ninth, earned his first collegiate win. Faucher was the last of three relievers who combined to work 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

UCI starter Shaun Vetrovec, a Newport Harbor High product, allowed two runs and two hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The series concludes Sunday at noon.

Seattle is 11-7.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University rallied for a 3-2 win in Game 2 to earn a Golden State Athletic Conference split against Menlo on Saturday.

The No. 25-ranked visitors won the first game, 12-2, as Brock Eissman went two for four with one run to lead the No. 18-ranked Lions’ six-hit attack.

Trai Patrick’s two-run single in the fifth was the difference in Game 2, in which Jose Rojas was one for two with a run batted in and a run scored for the winners (21-7-1, 11-4 in conference).

Tyler Steele pitched five innings to earn the Game 2 win and improve to 7-0.

Michael Jordan earned a two-inning save, his eighth of the season.

Menlo is 22-10, 9-6.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept two Golden State Athletic Conference games from Menlo on Saturday, winning the opener, 9-2, and closing out with a 10-4 triumph.

Britany Heinle was two for three with five runs batted in in Game 1, in which Taylor Wilson was three for five with two runs and Kaitlyn Estes was two for four with one RBI and one run.

Alexandra Olvera allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings to improve to 11-7.

In Game 2, Payton Ross was three for three with two RBIs and two runs, while Lindsday Sullivan was two for three with two RBIs for the No. 18-ranked Lions (21-14, 4-3 in conference).

Wilson and Estes were two for four with one RBI apiece to back a complete-game effort from Taylor Doyle, who is now 7-5.

Menlo is 12-12, 5-5.
