High School Roundup: Newport Harbor baseball shuts out University

IRVINE — Senior Jeremiah Sheldon threw a three-hit shutout, striking out eight in the Sailors’ first Foothill Division game in the Newport Elks Tournament on Thursday.

Luke Genova went one for four with a triple and two runs batted in for Newport Harbor (2-1).

Josh Spicer was two for four with an RBI, and Max Crabbe and Jake Genova each had two hits.

The Sailors return to pool-play action at Brea Olinda on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Estancia 3, La Serna 1

Nick Torres threw a complete game, striking out five for the host Eagles, who opened the Newport Elks Tournament in the Orange County Division on Thursday.

Jake McIntyre went one for two with a walk and a run batted in.

Colin Gardner and Trevor Brown each had a hit.

Estancia (4-0) plays at Buena Park in its next pool-play game on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Sage Hill 16, Bolsa Grande 1

GARDEN GROVE — Senior Conner Bock went three for six with a home run, a triple and six runs batted in for the Lightning in a Orange County Division pool-play opener in the Newport Elks Tournament on the road Thursday.

Sage Hill (3-1), ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 preseason poll, resumes pool-play action at Temecula Rancho Christian on Saturday at 11 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Newport Harbor 11, Santiago 6

Ashley McNerney produced four runs batted in to go with a double and three runs scored for the Sailors in the Savanna Tournament game at Newport Harbor.

Skialer Carter (one for three, two RBIs), Leah Freeman (one for four, two runs), Kendall Machado (two runs, two RBIs), Diana Surber (two for four, one double, two runs, one RBI), Haley Martinez (two for three, one run) and Samantha Del Toro (two for three) also contributed for Newport Harbor.

Anaheim 4, Estancia 0

Nefertiti Van Den Heever went three for three for the Eagles in the nonleague game on Thursday.
