Costumed crowd celebrates new year in chilly Pacific at Surf City Splash

The new year broke with sunshine Sunday morning in Huntington Beach, but that doesn’t mean the ocean was nice and warm for participants who took a dip in the chilly waves in the 17th annual Surf City Splash.
The water temperature at the time was about 59 degrees, according to seatemperature.info.

Many revelers showed up in costumes for a contest and hit the surf after a pancake breakfast at Pier Plaza.
Proceeds from registration fees will benefit the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach.
