Political Landscape: Costa Mesa City Council opposes Prop. 57

Costa Mesa City Council members voted 4-0 this week to officially oppose Proposition 57 — a state ballot measure that would open up additional parole opportunities for some prison inmates convicted of crimes considered to be nonviolent and allow judges to decide whether certain juveniles should be tried as adults.

Supporters of the measure say it will reduce the state’s overcrowded prison population and only applies to those convicted of nonviolent crimes.

Opponents argue Proposition 57 could increase crime rates and may allow inmates with violent criminal histories to be released early.

Costa Mesa activist groups sponsor political cartoon contest

Community activist groups critical of the Costa Mesa City Council’s current majority are sponsoring a political cartoon contest and asking artists to draw their best depictions of how the majority is “messing up” the city.

A $300 prize is being offered for the best entry.

Contest winners will be announced at the “Costa Messed Up” rally on Oct. 29 at The Harp Inn Irish Pub, 130 E. 17th St. in Costa Mesa. The rally runs from 3 to 6 p.m. and will feature live jazz and blues music from local band Crown Vic.
