Fire destroys Fountain Valley home after family tries to save it

A family was displaced Monday night when a two-alarm fire gutted their Fountain Valley home, despite their efforts to save it, authorities said.

Firefighters responded to a two-story residence in the 11000 block of Flower Avenue at 9:09 p.m., said Fountain Valley fire Battalion Chief Ron Cookston.

When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed in flames, Cookston said.

Firefighters from Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Garden Grove and the Orange County Fire Authority contained the blaze within about an hour, he said.

A family of three who were in the home at the time tried to fight the fire but left when the flames spread, Cookston said.

The family found accommodations from a relative, Cookston said.

Cookston said the home sustained about $500,000 in damage and was likely a total loss.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
