Four or five men armed with a baseball bat, a gun and a machete robbed a man early Sunday in Costa Mesa.
The man was walking to his car around 1:15 a.m. in a parking lot in the 1800 block of Monrovia Avenue when a group of men approached him and demanded money, said Costa Mesa police Sgt. Matt Selinske.
One of the men had a handgun, another was carrying a baseball bat and a third had a machete, Selinske said.
The victim gave up his wallet and cellphone but was not injured, Selinske said. The men fled in a sedan on southbound Monrovia Avenue.
The robbery occurred a week after a similar case Dec. 4 in which five men in a black sedan demanded money from a man walking just after midnight in the 1800 block of Placentia Avenue. The man gave them his wallet and cellphone. In that incident, the robbers punched and kicked the man after taking the items, police said. He suffered a broken jaw.
Selinske said police are investigating whether the robberies are related.
