Around Town: National ADHD organization holding conference in Costa Mesa

A national nonprofit organization that advocates for people with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is holding its annual conference in Costa Mesa this week.

Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or CHADD, began its conference Thursday and continues Friday and Saturday at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa hotel, 3050 Bristol St.

The event includes presentations and speeches from experts in the field, as well as breakout and networking sessions.

St. James to host 75th-anniversary event Sunday

St. James Anglican Church will celebrate its 75th anniversary Sunday with a service at 10 a.m. at the church’s Costa Mesa location, 2995 Airway Ave.

It will be followed by another gathering at noon at the Pacific Club, 4110 MacArthur Blvd., Newport Beach.

Students will lend a helping hand at Bolsa Chica State Beach

Nearly 300 students from Westminster and Orange elementary schools will participate in a cleanup Monday at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach.

The cleanup is part of Costa Mesa-based Orange County Coastkeeper’s Kids Care program, in which students can collect trash and participate in lessons about coastal pollution at the beach.

Christmas Co. event coming to fairgrounds

The 41st annual Christmas Co. event, organized by the Newport Beach-based Junior League of Orange County, is coming to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa on Nov. 18-19.

It includes shopping, tea parties and a casino, all to benefit the Junior League’s efforts to help the needy of Orange County.

Tickets start at $10.

Laguna to host disaster preparedness workshop

The city of Laguna Beach will hold a free disaster preparedness workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Laguna Beach Community & Susi Q Center.

Keynote speaker Alex Tardy, a National Weather Service meteorologist, will discuss the winter forecast while other presenters, such as Laguna Beach Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse and Emergency Operations Coordinator Jordan Villwock, will provide tips on how residents can be prepared for fires, floods, mudslides and other hazards.

The community center is at 380 Third St.

Group raising funds to maintain private North Laguna garden

Friends of the Hortense Miller Garden will hold an annual plant and decor sale with a booth at the farmers market in Laguna Beach on Nov. 19.

Proceeds will help maintain the private garden on 21/2 acres in Boat Canyon inside a gated North Laguna community.

The farmers market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon at the Lumberyard lot at 521 Forest Ave.

Tours of the garden, which are free, though donations are encouraged, can be arranged by calling (949) 497-0779.

Woman’s Club seeking donated items for December luncheon

The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach is seeking donated items such as holiday decorations, jewelry, art, toys and gently worn clothing for its Tarnished Treasures Luncheon and Fundraiser on Dec. 9.

Items will be on sale at the luncheon, with proceeds benefiting needy families in Laguna Beach.

Donations may be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Kinsman & Kinsman office at 32355 S. Coast Hwy., except for Nov. 24 and 25.

Donations also will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and 2 to 5 p.m. Thursdays at the Woman’s Club at 286 St. Ann’s Drive, except for Nov. 24.

The deadline to donate is Dec. 8.

Admission to the luncheon is $35 for club members and $40 for nonmembers. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.

Reservations are required by Dec. 4 and may be made at wclb.org/event.

Mother’s Market promotion aims to helps veterans and service dogs

Costa Mesa-based Mother’s Market & Kitchen this month is supporting Paws and Stripes, a nonprofit that gives service dogs to wounded military veterans.

For each sale of featured Nordic Naturals omega-3 products, Mother’s Market will contribute omega-3s to veterans and their service dogs through Paws and Stripes.
