Around Town: Pacifica rowing program to celebrate second year

To celebrate the second year of Pacifica Christian High School’s rowing program, a gathering will be held Aug. 11 at Newport Sea Base for the school’s student-athletes, their families and community members.

A boat given to the program will be unveiled at the event.

Two Pacifica students competed for the school during the rowing program’s inaugural year.

The boys’ program has since grown to 12 rowers, while the girls’ program has a few prospective rowers for the coming school year.

Newport Sea Base is at 1931 W. Coast Hwy., Newport Beach.

Chili cook-off in Costa Mesa to benefit Boys & Girls Club

Hi-Time Wine Cellars’ 10th annual Charity Chili Cook-off is setfrom noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hi-Time, 250 Ogle St., Costa Mesa.

More than 30 local restaurants and businesses will serve up their chili.

Guests can taste all the entries with a $10 donation. Drink and raffle tickets are $1.

Proceeds will go to the Boys & Girls Club of the Harbor Area.

Costa Mesa High to host engineering open house

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District Summer Engineering Academy will hold an open house from 8:15 to 10 a.m. Aug. 11 at Costa Mesa High School, 2650 Fairview Road.

The open house will have egg drop competitions for kindergarten through sixth grade. Student projects also will be on display in Rooms 280 and 285.

UCI’s Barclay to host concert for traditional Mexican performing arts

The nonprofit Relampago del Cielo will hold its 40th-anniversary concert at the Barclay Theatre at UC Irvine on Aug. 20 and 21.

Relampago del Cielo, based in Santa Ana, supports the study and preservation of traditional Mexican performing arts through music and dance.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Aug. 20 and 2 p.m. Aug. 21. Tickets are $35 per person.

The Barclay Theatre is at 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine.
