Driver seriously injured in crash that temporarily closes part of Baker Street in Costa Mesa

A busy thoroughfare in Costa Mesa was closed for hours Thursday following a car crash that sent a Tustin man to a hospital, authorities said.

The two-vehicle crash occurred in the 1100 block of Baker Street between Fairview Road and Babb Street at 10:27 a.m., said police Sgt. Dan Miles.

The 22-year-old man was driving a Honda Civic east on Baker at a high speed when he struck the back of a semi-trailer truck that was making a left turn across the eastbound lanes to enter a shopping center, authorities said.

The Civic’s driver was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment of a skull fracture, a traumatic brain injury and a fractured spine, said police Lt. Greg Scott.

“He is currently listed in critical but stable condition and has been admitted to the intensive care unit,” Scott said.

The area of Baker was closed until Thursday afternoon while police investigated the crash.

The 44-year-old driver of the truck was released at the scene.
