A fire caused severe damage to the roof of a strip mall in Huntington Beach over the weekend, authorities said.
Firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the roof of the commercial center at 7170 Edinger Ave. at about 8 p.m. Saturday, said Huntington Beach fire Battalion Chief Jeff Lopez.
Firefighters had to work quickly because buildings there were under construction, making them more susceptible to “rapid fire growth,” Lopez said.
Crews from Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa and the Orange County Fire Authority extinguished the fire before it spread from the roof, Lopez said.
The fire likely was accidental, but it caused an estimated $20,000 in property damage, Lopez said.
No one was injured.
