A man was taken to a hospital in serious condition after a pickup ended up on top of the Chevrolet Corvette he was driving following a freeway crash in Costa Mesa on Thursday evening.
Costa Mesa firefighters responded at about 5:30 p.m. to reports of a crash involving two vehicles on the southbound 55 Freeway near Victoria Street, fire Capt. Chris Coates said.
The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
A woman in her 30s who was the sole passenger in the Corvette was able to get out of the vehicle. But firefighters had to cut the driver, a man in his 30s, out of the car.
“It was a very complicated and laborious extrication,” Coates said. “It took about 30 minutes to cut him out of the vehicle.”
The man was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana with serious but not life-threatening injuries, Coates said.
The driver of the pickup, a Ford F-150, was uninjured, authorities said.
