A man died on the side of the 405 Freeway in Costa Mesa on Monday afternoon after he was pinned under a motor home, according to authorities.
At 4:48 p.m., a Freeway Service Patrol tow truck pulled over to the motor home on the shoulder of the northbound 405 south of Fairview Road, Costa Mesa fire Capt. Chris Coates said.
The tow truck driver looked under the 20- to 25-foot vehicle and saw a man underneath it, Coates said.
When the man didn’t respond to the driver, the driver called for the California Highway Patrol and fire department, according to Coates.
Crew members from the first fire engine on the scene realized the man was trapped under the motor home’s rear axle, according to the fire department.
The firefighters called for more help and used heavy rescue tools to free the man, Coates said.
However, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Coates said.
Authorities have not identified the man, who was in his 50s, and did not provide other details.
The CHP is investigating how the man got pinned under the vehicle.
