Around Town: Tesla test drives for kids set at Fashion Island
Children can take test drives of the Tesla Model S for Kids from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Tesla Motors’ Fashion Island location in Newport Beach.
The Model S for Kids, a toy car created by electric-vehicle maker Tesla and Radio Flyer, comes in multiple colors and has a Flight Speed lithium ion battery to provide high performance.
Shipping of the model will begin in July.

Girls Day takes students to South Coast Plaza
Santa Ana-based nonprofit Community Service Programs presented a Girls Day Incentive event Wednesday for 21 girls from Anaheim-area schools.
The Girls Day was for members of the Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership Girls Club who have maintained a minimum 2.0 grade point average, had no unexcused absences or behavioral issues and completed 35 hours of community service during the school year.
The event took them to Sephora at Costa Mesa’s South Coast Plaza for makeovers and to Anaheim Hills Golf Course for lunch.

Northwood wins first video contest showcasing Irvine life
The Irvine Co. announced Northwood High School as the winner of the $5,000 first prize in the inaugural “Only in Irvine” high school video competition.
Northwood, Beckman, Irvine, University and Woodbridge high schools competed by creating three-minute videos showing life in Irvine.
Northwood’s video captured sites such as Irvine City Hall, UC Irvine and the Giant Wheel at the Irvine Spectrum Center.
Each of the other schools received a $2,500 prize.

5 Irvine students get Friends of the Library scholarships
The Irvine Heritage Park Friends of the Library awarded $1,000 scholarships to five seniors from Irvine, Northwood and Woodbridge high schools.
More than 30 applicants sought the scholarships. Selections were based on performance in and outside the classroom.
The recipients are Brittany Chen of Irvine High, Chris Zhou of Northwood and Irene Koo, Natasha Takahashi and Lauren Kim of Woodbridge.
The scholarships are funded through revenue from the Friends of the Library bookstore at Heritage Park.

Ecuadorian astronaut visits Irvine students for satellite project
Ronnie Nader, the first Ecuadorian astronaut, met with Irvine students May 14 to deliver batteries and solar panels for their planned launch of a miniature satellite, CubeSat, into low Earth orbit next spring.
The project is a collaborative effort of six Irvine high schools to attempt the first high school-based CubeSat launch in the United States. It is boosted by $150,000 in funding from the Irvine Public Schools Foundation.
Teams of 25 to 30 students from Beckman, Woodbridge, Northwood, Irvine, University and Portola high schools will each work on one component of the project. The new Portola High opens this fall.
Nader arrived from Ecuador to give materials and advice to Northwood’s Team Power.

Irvine residents are grand-prize finalists for dance and music
Students Megan Goldstein and Geneva Lewis, both of Irvine, were among 14 grand-prize finalists in The Music Center’s 28th annual Spotlight scholarship and arts education program.
Megan, who attends Pacific Coast High School in Tustin, was named a finalist in non-classical dance. Geneva, who is home-schooled, was a finalist for classical instrumental.
All finalists will receive $5,000 scholarships. They also will appear in a performance June 11 at The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
Students were recognized in seven categories: acting, ballet, non-classical dance, classical voice, non-classical voice, classical instrumental and jazz instrumental. The finalists were chosen from among more than 1,600 students in Southern California who auditioned for a panel of judges.

Spot open on Costa Mesa Senior Commission
The Costa Mesa City Council is accepting application to fill a vacancy on the city’s Senior Commission, an advisory body to the council on subjects related to the Costa Mesa Senior Center.
The vacant seat’s term expires in February 2019.
