Car crashes into Costa Mesa apartment building at 2 a.m.; driver flees

A driver fled after crashing into an apartment building in Costa Mesa early Thursday, according to authorities.

A silver sedan smashed into the dwelling’s wall in the 1800 block of Monrovia Avenue at about 2 a.m., police said.

The car wasn’t going fast enough to break through the wall or seriously damage the building, according to police. But the crash broke a window and smashed some stucco off the wall’s exterior, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Pat Wessel said.

According to a witness, a man who’d been driving the car got out and quickly hopped into a white pickup truck that had been with him or pulled up shortly after the crash, Wessel said.

The witness also told police that the driver was the only person in the car, Wessel said.
Police have not been able to find the driver.
