Restaurant/bar’s request for longer hours goes before Costa Mesa Planning Commission

The question of whether The Hub restaurant and bar should be allowed to extend its hours will be considered by the Costa Mesa Planning Commission on Monday.
Owners of The Hub, at 1749 Newport Blvd., are seeking permission to stay open from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Currently, the venue can’t open earlier than 9 a.m. or stay open past midnight.
The applicant, Matt Stowe for property owner R.D. Olson Investments II LLC, says the “business is at a competitive disadvantage because they have limited hours of operation,” according to planning documents.
City staff members, however, are concerned that allowing The Hub to stay open until 2 a.m. on weekdays could create extra noise and other disturbances for those living nearby.
Staff recommends allowing The Hub to open at 7 a.m. every day but to have a 2 a.m. closing only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It would be required to close by 11 p.m. Sundays through Wednesdays.
The Planning Commission previously considered the request for longer hours in August. But at that time, the Costa Mesa Police Department didn’t approve because of the “number and nature of service calls” at The Hub. The commission continued the item.
The Police Department is no longer objecting to extending The Hub’s weekend hours, as there have been no service calls since the commission last reviewed the issue, city documents state.
Monday’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 77 Fair Drive.
