Costa Mesa seeks grant to help run free buses between shopping areas

Costa Mesa residents may soon be able to take free buses between South Coast Plaza and The Lab and The Camp shopping centers, should the Orange County Transportation Authority approve a grant request to help fund the routes.
City Council members voted last week to apply for funding for the project through Measure M2 — a half-cent sales tax that funds transportation programs countywide.
The city’s proposal is to run two buses between South Coast Plaza and The Lab and The Camp — both located on Bristol Street near Randolph Avenue.
The buses would run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, according to Raja Sethuraman, Costa Mesa’s transportation services manager.
The estimated cost of the project is $3 million, Sethuraman said. The city is requesting that the grant cover 90% of that.
If all goes according to plan, the new routes could be in place early next year, Sethuraman said.
