Political Landscape: Assemblyman Matthew Harper announces reelection campaign
Assemblyman Matthew Harper (R-Huntington Beach) of the 74th District announced this week his intent to run for reelection in the June primary.
In a statement, Harper, first elected to the position in 2014, said he will be “running on his record of voting for lower taxes, fiscal responsibility, safer communities and individual freedom.”
Harper is a former mayor of Huntington Beach and former board member of the Huntington Beach Union High School District.
So far, three others have declared their candidacy for the Assembly seat: Democrat and small-business owner Karina Onofre, who ran unsuccessfully for the 74th District post in 2014; Brendon Salisbury, a Republican; and Katherine Daigle, a Republican businesswoman from Irvine and former Irvine mayoral candidate.
The 74th District includes Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and portions of Huntington Beach and Irvine.
