Vanguard falls in NAIA pool play

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Charlotte Heerlyn had a team-best 18 kills and hit .390, but the Lions dropped a 20-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-12, 15-13 decision in the second of three pool-play matches at the NAIA Tournament on Wednesday.
Vanguard, 0-2 in pool play to go to 22-8 for the season, completes pool play on Thursday against Northwestern of Iowa (35-3) at 6 p.m. PST.
Kelly Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, had 32 kills for the Lions, who hit .125 as a team, 75 points worse than the opponents from Alabama. Spring Hill also posted a 14-7 advantage in total blocks.
Tied, 13-13, in the final set, Spring Hill (37-4) recorded a stuff block and benefited from a hitting error to close out the win.
Jessica Neves had 12 kills and Sarah McKinny added 10 for the Lions.
