After shutout loss, Vanguard enters GSAC tourney as No. 3 seed

SANTA BARBARA — The host Warriors, ranked No. 3, scored in the 47th minute to earn a two-game conference sweep of the defending champion Lions, ranked No. 10, on Saturday.
Tiffany DiMaculangan scored an unassisted goal for the difference.
Vanguard (14-3, 7-3 in conference) finished third and is the No. 3 seed for the six-team GSAC Tournament that begins Tuesday.
Vanguard will play host to No. 6-seeded Biola at a time to be determined on Tuesday. The semifinals are Friday and the title game is on Nov. 15.
Concordia won its first GSAC women’s soccer title.

Westmont 3, Vanguard 1
SANTA BARBARA — The host Warriors prevailed in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Saturday.
Vanguard (8-7-1, 4-5-1 in conference), finished fifth and will be the No. 5 seed in the six-team GSAC Tournament that begins on Wednesday.
The Lions, for whom Nahum Paz scored an unassisted goal on Saturday, will visit No. 4-seeded Westmont (10-6, 6-4) in the tournament’s first round.
Concordia won the regular-season crown.

UC Irvine 2, Cal State Fullerton 1
IRVINE – A goal and an assist from Mats Bjurman helped the host Anteaters prevail in the Big West Conference game on Saturday night.
The win, along with UC Riverside’s 1-0 upset of Cal State Northridge, allowed UCI (10-4-3, 5-2-1 in conference) to assume sole possession of first place in the Big West South Division with two regular-season conference games remaining.
Christian Santana also scored for the Anteaters, who received four saves from Michael Breslin.
Fullerton fell to 6-9-1, 3-4-1.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
UC Berkeley 91, Vanguard 62
BERKELEY — Junior All-American Nicole Ballestero had 22 points to pace the visiting Lions in the exhibition game on Saturday.
Samantha Doucette added 19 points for the Lions, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, who won the turnover battle, 14-12.
Cal had three players with 17 points.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Big West Conference Championship
SAN LUIS OBISPO — UC Irvine freshman Isaiah Thompson finished 13th as the Anteaters were fifth as a team on Saturday at Fairbanks Memorial Cross Country Course.
The Anteaters totaled 127, 95 off the pace of victorious Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Thompson completed the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 40.9 seconds.
Riley Martin (22nd in 26:40.9), Alex Tebbe (29th in 27:08.9) and Amir Shirif (31st in 27:13.0) were also notable for UCI.
Chris Frias of Cal Poly was the individual champion in 25:19.5.
The ‘Eaters compete in the NCAA West Regional at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento on Nov. 15.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Big West Conference Championship
SAN LUIS OBISPO — UCI finished seventh with senior Carlotta Pham posting the Anteaters’ top finish at 30th on Saturday at Fairbanks Memorial Cross Country Course.
Pham completed the 6,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 53.5 seconds.
Nicole Mendoza (39th in 24:14.3) was the other Anteater in the top 40.
Laura Hollander of conference champion Cal Poly won the race in 20:43.9.
UCI travels to Sacramento for the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 15 at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Hawaii def. UC Irvine
HONOLULU — Arielle Manz led the visiting Anteaters with eight kills and four block assists in their 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 Big West Conference road loss on Friday.
UCI fell to 11-12, 2-7 in conference.
No. 13-ranked Hawaii is 17-4, 6-3.

UC Santa Barbara 11, UC Irvine 7
SANTA BARBARA —Senior Bojan Hrlec scored a game-high three goals for the No. 8-ranked Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest on Saturday.
UCI (11-9, 0-4 in conference) had two goals from freshman Kyle Trush.
No. 6-ranked UCSB broke a 4-4 tie with five straight goals on its way to improving to 16-6, 3-2.
UCI plays host to Stanford Friday at 7 p.m.
