Newport’s Vetrovec verbally commits to UCI baseball

Newport Harbor High incoming senior pitcher Shaun Vetrovec has verbally committed to the UC Irvine baseball program, Sailors Coach Patrick Murphy said on Facebook on Friday.

Vetrovec, a two-time Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team selection, has been Newport Harbor’s ace the past two seasons. He earned first-team All-Sunset League accolades as a junior and second-team all-league honors as a sophomore.

Last season, Vetrovec went 5-4 with a 2.20 earned-run average and struck out 38 in 47 2/3 innings. The right-hander also picked up each of the Sailors’ three league victories.

Vetrovec, a 6-foot-1, 180-pounder, hit .317 with two home runs, 18 runs batted in and seven doubles.
