Men’s Volleyball: UCI’s Russell recognized

UC Irvine freshman Kyle Russell has been named National Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. after helping the Anteaters earn a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victories last week.
The 6-foot-9 Russell had a career-high 14 kills with just one error on 17 attempts for a .765 hitting percentage in a sweep of visiting Stanford on Friday. He added four digs and three blocks.
In a sweep of visiting Pacific on Saturday, Russell had 10 kills, two aces and a career-best five kills.
No. 4-ranked UCI is 20-6, 17-6 in the MPSF, heading into Wednesday’s MPSF home date with No. 10-ranked Cal State Northridge.
