IRVINE — Scott Gottchling’s three-run double in the first inning helped the Anteaters win the nonconference game Thursday at UCI.
Kyle Hooper improved to 3-0 for UCI (7-5), pitching six innings of one-run ball.
Jimmy Litchfield came on with runners at the corners in the ninth, inducing a two-out popout to earn his first save of the season.
BYU dropped to 4-5.
The series continues Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Fullerton 5, Orange Coast 3
COSTA MESA — Stefan Sabol doubled and drove in two runs on Thursday, but the Pirates, ranked No. 1 in Southern California, got upset in an Orange Empire Conference game.
The loss is only OCC’s second of the season, first in conference play. The Pirates are now 16-2-1, 3-1 in conference.
Fullerton starter Richard Lucas (2-2) pitched 7 1/3 innings, striking out eight and allowing just two runs and two hits
Fullerton improved to 6-10-1, 1-3.
OCC plays at Golden West College on Saturday at noon.
