COSTA MESA — Pirates Coach Mike Thornton earned victory No. 500 at OCC.
Thornton achieved the milestone after the Pirates rallied from a 23-22 halftime deficit in the season-opening nonconference game Friday.
Ashley Engeln had 10 points and six assists to pace the winners, who received 12 points from Tessie Pikula.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Sophomore Jasmine Bernard had a career-high 21 points off the bench for the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference season opener Friday.
UCI made seven of 17 three-point attempts and forced 20 turnovers, three fewer than it committed. But the hosts overcame a 47-40 halftime deficit.
Freshman Methlyn Onogomuho had 16 points for UCI.

Cal 77, UC Irvine 55
BERKELEY — Sophomore Chris McNealy had 14 points on five-of-nine shooting from the field to lead the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference season opener Friday.
Freshman Will Davis had eight points and nine rebounds for UCI, which had 12 turnovers, two fewer than the Golden Bears.
McNealy had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

CYPRESS — Karlee Riggs had 13 kills to help the Pirates to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 Orange Empire Conference win Friday night.
Allison Lumsden had 27 assists, Andi Frisina had 17 digs and Dana Nicholson had 15 digs for OCC (16-3, 11-2 in conference).
Cypress is 10-12, 5-8.
