College Roundup: Pirates upend Rustlers

COSTA MESA — Aimee Melone had 20 kills and 13 digs to lead the Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team to a 22-25,25-22, 27-25, 26-24 Orange Empire Conference win over rival Golden West College Wednesday night.
The Pirates, ranked No. 5 in the state, rallied from an opening-game loss to top the No. 12-ranked Rustlers, maintaining their unbeaten record in the OEC (4-0).
Whitney Crosby and Katherine Wichner each had eight kills for OCC (9-1 overall), while setter Kimya Jafroudi paced the offense with 44 assists. Freshman libero Maddie Baird anchored the Pirates’ defense with 20 digs.
Ashley Botana led the Rustlers (6-5, 2-2) with 12 kills.
MEN’S SOCCER
Vanguard 2, Concordia 0
COSTA MESA — Kyle O’Brien scored two goals for the No. 14-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Wednesday.
Trevor Herrera had three saves in his shutout for Vanguard (5-7, 4-1 in conference).
Adam Holstein had two assists.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — UC Irvine sophomore Michelle Park had her best-career finish, placing fifth as UCI finished sixth as a team in the 54-hole event completed Wednesday at the New Mexico State Golf Course.
Park shot 215 (69-73-73) to post her first top-10 finish.
Freshman Ronnie Valerio (tied for 22nd, 224) also stood out for UCI, the team score for which (889) was 23 off the pace of victorious New Mexico State.
UCI will participate in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, Oct. 25-27.
