Breakers lose at New York
NEW YORK — The Orange County Breakers lost on the road to the New York Empire, 23-21 in extended play, in a World Team Tennis match on Thursday night.
The match featured a rain delay and it was eventually moved indoors.
The Breakers won two sets. In women’s doubles, Andreja Klepac and Yanina Wickmayer beat Kirsten Flipkens and Maria Sanchez, 5-4. In men’s singles, Teymuraz Gabashvili beat New York’s Mardy Fish, 5-3.
Gabashvili’s win set the match into extended play. The Breakers player won the first two games there to pull the Breakers within 22-21, but Fish won the next game to end the match.
Orange County fell to 1-3, while New York is now 3-2. The Breakers are tied for last in the six-team league.
The Breakers return home to Palisades Tennis Club for a rematch against the Empire on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
