High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys have strong showing at Clovis Invitational

The Newport Harbor High boys’ cross-country team placed sixth in the extra-large school race in the Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday.

Sailors senior Alexis Garcia finished second with a time of 15 minutes 41.5 seconds. Palmdale Highland sophomore Daniel Rodriguez won the race in 15:32.9.

Will DeBassio (21st, 16:20.0), Michael Davey (38th, 16:32.2), Chett Clark (78th, 16:52.4) and Luke Downing (83rd, 16:58.6) helped Newport Harbor put up a team score of 214. Davis won the team battle with 109 points.

Edison also ran in the race. Sophomore Jeff Ritter paced the Chargers, clocking in at 16:59.6 (84th).

Senior Mia Matsunami paced Newport Harbor in the girls’ extra-large school division, placing 10th in 18:57.5.

In the girls’ medium school race, Corona del Mar’s Annabelle Boudreau ran with the leaders, taking fourth in 18:31.0. Studio City Harvard-Westlake nailed down the top two spots, as sophomore Natalia Quintero (18:06.2) and freshman Daniela Quintero (18:06.7) crossed the finish line together.

CdM’s boys placed in the top 10 as a team in the medium school division. The Sea Kings took ninth with 338 points. Seniors Joseph Cianfrani (26th, 16:49.6) and Duncan Taylor (29th, 16:50.3) led CdM. Nico Pence (17:06.7), Ethan Bollman (89th, 17:36.0) and Austin Leehealey (154th, 18:21.4) also factored into the scoring quintet.

Central Park Invitational

Fountain Valley senior Justin Schmidt (35th, 16:07.1) led all local boys in the Central Park Invitational in Huntington Beach on Saturday.

Fellow Barons senior Nicholas Mockus placed 46th in 16:21.4, while junior Carlos Cahuantzi paced Huntington Beach in 16:58.0.

Oilers sophomore Lindsay Rule paced the area’s girls with a time of 20:10.7 (88th).

Estancia was led by sophomore Hope Millon, who completed the course in 23:48.8.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Orinda Miramonte 14, Corona del Mar 12: The Sea Kings finished sixth in the 16-team S&R Sport Invitational tournament after losing the fifth-place match Saturday at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center.

Tanner Pulice led CdM with seven goals, and Tyler Harvey scored three. Haig Mavusi and Caden Strauss also scored for the Sea Kings.

Earlier Saturday, the Sea Kings beat Dana Hills 11-5. Harvey led the way with five goals and two assists, while Pulice scored four. Cole Fisher had three assists.

CdM (9-9) hosts Huntington Beach in a Surf League game on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

San Clemente 12, Laguna Beach 11: The Breakers dropped the close nonleague match Saturday afternoon at Vista Hermosa Aquatics Center.

Laguna Beach (11-8) is back in action Wednesday night, when it plays Newport Harbor in a Surf League game at 6:20 p.m. at Corona del Mar High.
