Breakdown: Costa Mesa opens the second year of its on-campus stadium with the nonleague game against Gabrielino, of San Gabriel … The Mustangs will be trying to start a modest winning streak dating to last season. They beat Saddleback in their regular-season finale last year, following an 0-9 start … Costa Mesa can win its second season opener in three years. In 2015, the Mustangs upset Northwood on the road in coach Glen Fisher’s first game, snappign a 13-year streak of losing season openers … Fisher is now in his third season … Both Costa Mesa (6 points per game) and Gabrielino (15.6) had trouble scoring last year, suffering three shutout losses each … Gabrielino finished with a 2-8 record and lost its last seven games, and has not made the CIF Southern Section playoffs since 2013 … Swanson, Perez and Valle are among eight seniors on the Mustangs’ roster, with Swanson entering his third year as starting quarterback.
