Laguna Beach’s Obradovich earns league MVP

Laguna Beach High Pete Obradovich took home the Orange Coast League MVP honor for lifting the boys’ volleyball team to its seventh straight 10-0 league championship season.

Obradovich is on the first team with Laguna Beach senior setter Cole Paxson, senior middle blocker Barry Greenough and senior outside hitter Josh McManus. The foursome helped the Breakers (20-5 overall) reach the CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinals, losing at Corona del Mar in five sets.

Estancia senior outside hitter Evan Pettingill and junior outside hitter Liam Nelson made the first team after the Eagles (11-10, 6-4 in league) finished third in league and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

The Eagles lost the Division 3 first-round match in four sets at Westminster.

Obradovich, who is bound for USC, finished with 323 kills and a .318 hitting percentage.

He had 35 service aces, nine solo blocks, 18 block assists and 163 digs.

Paxson, a USC signee, amassed 814 assists, to go with 161 digs, 25 kills, 21 aces, three solo blocks and 22 block assists.

Greenough had 154 kills and a .427 hitting percentage. He totaled 17 solo blocks, 73 block assists, 11 aces and 22 digs.

Pettingill, a repeat first-team selection, finished with 365 kills and a .379 hitting percentage.

He added 32 aces and 15 total blocks.

Nelson recorded 207 kills and 45 aces.

The members of the second team were Laguna Beach junior opposite Sam Burgi, senior middle blocker Ryan Blaser and sophomore libero Enzo Sadler, Estancia junior setter Bennett Goodman and senior libero Teagan Proctor, and Costa Mesa senior outside hitter Julio Chavez.
