Boys’ Lacrosse: All-Sunset League team features local players

Huntington Beach High senior long-stick midfielder Ricky Masters, junior goalie Grady Mercier, senior attacker Ayden Colbert, senior defender Jeremy Anderson made the All-Sunset League first team in boys’ lacrosse for leading the Oilers to their first league championship in four years.

Huntington Beach coach Ryan Kelaher was the Coach of the Year.

Newport Harbor senior attacker Kyle Duffy was the Scholar-Athlete.

The No. 16-seeded Oilers (9-10, 6-2 in league) lost at No. 1 Corona del Mar 11-1 in the first round of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs.

Edison senior attacker AJ McLean, senior defender Tommy West and senior faceoff specialist Nick Nguyen, Newport Harbor senior midfielders Alex Pearce and Chandler Pearce, and Marina senior defender Chase Payson garnered first-team laurels.

Edison (11-6, 5-3) shared second place in league, while Newport Harbor (6-11, 4-4) came in fourth, followed by Marina (6-12, 0-8).

Making the second team were Huntington Beach senior attacker Kyle Henriksen, senior midfielder Cayden Carthey and senior defender Sean D’Zmura, Edison senior midfielder Evan Siegel and senior goalie Jake Austin, Newport Harbor senior attacker Patrick Lynch and junior faceoff specialist Race Mooers, and Marina senior defender Eric Rymer.

The honorable mention list had Huntington Beach junior attacker Michael Goodheart, junior defender Dylan Werlinger and junior defender Mason Corkett, Edison senior midfielder Mike Balding, senior midfielder Dustin Nelson and sophomore defender Isaac Hurdle, Newport Harbor junior attacker Jared Rabin and senior faceoff specialist Paxton Miller, and Marina senior midfielder Kevin Arent.
