7 local players are All-CIF in boys’ water polo
Huntington Beach High seniors Garrett Zaan and Jacob Cavano, as well as Newport Harbor sophomore Makoto Kenney, have all earned first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 honors in boys’ water polo.
Corona del Mar seniors Mitchell Cooper and Henry Wilde, and sophomore Tanner Pulice, earned first-team accolades in Division 2, as did Laguna Beach junior Colton Gregory.
Kenney, an attacker, helped the Sailors (25-7) win the Sunset League title, finish third in Division 1 and advance to the final of the inaugural CIF Southern California Regional Division 1 championships. He led Newport Harbor with 72 goals, 27 assists and 27 field blocks. His 68 steals were also second on the team.
Zaan, a center, and Cavano, a UCLA-bound utility player, were key players for the Oilers (17-11). Huntington Beach finished second in the Sunset League and eighth in Division 1, advancing to the semifinals of the Regional Division 2 playoffs.
Cooper and Wilde were co-captains for the Sea Kings (21-10), who won the Pacific Coast League and advanced to the Division 2 title match before falling to Foothill. Pulice led the team in scoring, CdM coach Kareem Captain said.
Gregory led the Orange Coast League champion Breakers (19-10) in scoring for the second straight year, helping them reach the Division 2 quarterfinals.
Newport Beach resident Jackson Seybold, a senior at Mater Dei High, was the Division 1 Player of the Year after helping the Monarchs earn the Division 1 title.
