UC Irvine junior Itos Aikhionbare has been named Big West Conference Field Athlete of the Year in voting by the conference coaches.
Aikhionbare is the first student-athlete from UCI to win the conference’s top field honor.
She was a double-winner at last weekend’s Big West Championships in Davis, capturing the shotput (49 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and the discus (167-9).
A three-time Big West Field Athlete of the Week honoree in 2014, she set UCI school records this season in the shot put (53-9) and the discus (170-2). She has won the shotput and discus in the same meet five times this season.
The Big West leader in both events this season, her mark of 53-9 in the shotput ranks No. 9 in the West Region and 21st in the nation. Her discus mark of 170-2 is 33rd in the region.
