LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Vanguard University defeated Montana State Northern, 73-69, Saturday after falling to Westminster of Utah, 85-49, on Friday.
Alex Chapman led the Lions with 19 points and nine rebounds Saturday, while William Thompson had 16 points and Cameron Nettles had 13 points.
Vanguard (1-1), under first-year coach Rhett Soliday, was paced by senior Chapman Friday. Chapman scored 17 points, hitting seven of 14 field-goal attempts.
The Lions made just seven of 34 from the field in the first half Friday (20.6%) and finished at 29.6% from the field for the game.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
UTEP 72, UC Irvine 57
EL PASO, Texas — Junior Mikah Maly-Karros had 24 points and eight rebounds to lead the visiting Anteaters in their season opener, a nonconference clash Saturday.
UTEP posted a 54-28 rebounding advantage and outscored the Anteaters, 30-16, in the paint.
UTEP was also 16 of 17 from the free-throw line, while UCI made just 22 of 36 foul shots (61.1%).
Junior Kiara Belen had 10 points and six rebounds for UCI, which visits New Mexico Monday at 6 p.m.
Gloria Brown led the Miners with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
MEN’S WATER POLO
UC Irvine 7, UC Santa Barbara 6
IRVINE — Doug Lindsey and Brandon Johnson scored two goals each for the No. 5-ranked Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Saturday.
Goalie Matt Johnson had 17 saves for UCI (16-6, 4-3 in the MPSF).
The No. 7-ranked Gauchos are 10-9, 1-5.

Orange Coast 4, Fullerton 1
COSTA MESA — Christian Huerta had a goal and an assist Friday in the Orange Empire Conference finale for the Pirates, who ended their season 4-11-6, 2-7-5 in conference.
The game was the last for OCC Coach Laird Hayes, who steps down after 24 seasons with a 260-176-94 record. During his 24 seasons, OCC won seven conference titles and two state championships.
Daniel Lopez scored in the 19th minute for OCC. Huerta added a goal in the 65th minute with an assist from Toshi Fujimura and Huerta assisted on Luis Salgado’s goal to put OCC on top, 3-1.
Hussein Elgohary scored on an assist from Fujimura to round out the scoring.

UC Irvine def. Cal State Northridge
IRVINE — Kari Pestolesi had 12 kills to help lead the Anteaters to a 25-23, 25-21, 26-24 Big West Conference win Saturday.
Juliane Piggot had 10 kills, Kristin Winkler had 17 digs and Mary Carls had 26 assists for UCI (7-20, 3-11 in conference).
The Matadors, led by Monica McFarland’s 11 kills, dropped to 12-17, 4-9.
Vanguard def. San Diego Christian
SAN DIEGO — KaUwila Lavea had 12 kills and Newport Harbor High product Jamie Heenan added 10 kills, 11 digs and four aces to help the visiting Lions post a 25-11, 25-21, 25-14 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.
Alexandra Leja had 36 assists for the Lions (14-15, 6-14 in conference).
San Diego Christian is 9-20, 2-18.
Cal State Fullerton def. UC Irvine
FULLERTON — Senior Juliane Piggott led the Anteaters with eight kills in the Titans’ 25-9, 25-22, 25-19 Big West Conference home sweep Friday night.
Kari Pestolesi had seven kills and sophomore libero Kristin Winkler had 16 digs for UCI (6-20, 2-11).
First-place Cal State Fullerton is 23-5, 11-2.
