BASEBALL
UC Irvine 5, Alabama State 3
HOUSTON — Senior first baseman Jordon Fox went two for two with two runs batted in and sophomore Phil Ferragamo pitched four scoreless innings of one-hit relief to pace the Anteaters in the season opener at the Urban Invitational at Minute Maid Park.
Senior Ronnie Shaeffer, junior Scott Gottschling and freshman Jerry McClanahan each drove in one run for UCI, which has won six straight season openers.
Ferragamo struck out two and did not walk a batter to earn the win. Starter Crosby Slaught allowed no earned runs in two innings, while Mitch Merten earned the save by getting the final out.
UCI plays Southern on Saturday at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Cypress 58, Orange Coast 28
COSTA MESA — The Pirates had their second-lowest point total in school history after losing the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.
OCC scored 24 in a game March 2, 1978 vs. San Diego Mesa.
Tessie Pikula and Jenna Arnett scored seven points each for OCC (11-18, 3-9 in conference). Cypress (19-10, 10-2) won the OEC title.

COSTA MESA — Will Ligon scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.
Darnell Banks had 12 points and eight rebounds for OCC (9-19, 4-8 in conference).
Cypress is 9-18, 2-10.
