Newport Harbor High left tackle Ramsey Hufford made the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Underclassmen second team for juniors in football.
Hufford, a 6-3, 296-pounder, helped the Sailors finish second in the Sunset League and reach the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division playoffs. The Sailors’ 4-1 record in the Sunset League was their best in 35 years and their quarterfinal appearance was their first in seven years.
Hufford played a big role in the Sailors’ offense averaging 30.2 points per game during a five-game winning streak late in the season. One of those wins included Newport Harbor’s first playoff triumph since 2007.
Hufford also started on defense for Newport Harbor (7-5 overall), finishing with 69 tackles, 10 for losses, two sacks, 10 hurries and two forced fumbles. He shared the All-Sunset League Defensive Lineman of the Year award, and picked up CIF Southern Section Southwest Division, third-team All-Orange County and Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team honors.
