Laguna 14U girls capture title

The Laguna Beach Water Polo Club girls’ 14-and-under team won its division championship Sunday by winning four games at the sixth annual Evan Cousineau Memorial Cup.

It was the first tournament appearance of the 2013-14 season for Laguna which played its games at JSerra High and Santiago Canyon College.

Laguna opened the tournament Saturday with an easy, 21-1 victory over Huntington Beach. The locals came back later that day to post a resounding, 11-2 win over Corona del Mar.

Laguna’s third victory was an 11-2 decision in the semifinals over United which earned the team a spot in the finals against Riverside. Laguna jumped out to a quick 4-0 start and rolled to another 11-2 win to take the title.

The Laguna girls’ 14U team is: Isabel Riches, Audrey Duffy, Alana Evans, Sophia Lucas, Thea Walsh, Evan Tingler, Ally Meredith, Danielle Borelli, Kyla Whitelock and Delaney Gendron.

Next up for the 14U girls’ team, which is coached by Matt Tingler, is the 2013 SPA Age Group Championships Nov. 10-11.

Also at the Evan Cousineau Memorial Cup, the Laguna 10U boys’ team reached the semifinals in its division where it lost, 17-1, to Huntington Beach.
