Laguna shoots a season best

A new team low score has earned the Laguna Beach High girls’ golf team another Orange Coast League victory.

Laguna won for the eighth time in league competition when the Breakers defeated host Calvary Chapel, 204-254, at Mile Square Park Classic Golf Course (par 34) in Fountain Valley. The 204 score was a season-low team score for the Breakers who took their OCL record to 8-0 and improved to 8-5 overall.

MaryKate Quellmalz shot even par 34 to win medalist honors.

“MaryKate played a fantastic round of golf, scoring par on all nine holes,” Laguna Assistant Coach Sean Quigley said. “This is probably her most impressive day with our team. She is a long hitter and can post a lot of birdies, but being too aggressive can lead to bogies as well.

“Today (Monday), she showed she can be patient, keep to her plan and not try and force anything. We’ve talked about playing each hole individually, one at a time, and it looks like she did that really well.”

BellaRose Robinson was next in line for Laguna at 41, followed by Leslie Dwight’s score of 42.

“She has been working hard on her driver and her scores have been creeping lower and lower over the past four matches, so it looks like she will be playing her best golf when our league tournament gets underway within the next week,” Quigley said of Dwight.

Quigley also said that Hailey McCullough had a “great shooting day,” her score of 44 being “one of her best scores of the year.”

“The depth of our team was too much for Calvary, as we had all five of our scoring players shooting in the mid- to low-40s,” he said. “If we continue to play like this, up to our potential, it will be difficult for anyone in our league to beat us.”

Laguna scores from Monday’s win over Calvary Chapel: MaryKate Quellmalz (34, medalist); BellaRose Robinson (42); Leslie Dwight (42); Halle Redfearn (43); Hailey McCullough (44); Hannah Burnett (53).

Monday’s 204 team score eclipsed the previous season-low score for the Breakers who had previously set the mark on Oct. 8 at Mesa Linda Golf Course (par 33) in Costa Mesa. The Breakers defeated host Costa Mesa, 205-258, in an OCL match.

Redfearn, in her first year on the Laguna golf team, was match medalist with a career-low score of 37. Lindsey Lowell, also in her first year on varsity and playing in her first varsity match, shot a 51.

“Halle Redfearn had a breakthrough day,” Quigley said. “She is a good, natural athlete and works hard every day to improve her game. There is no doubt that she will be competing with the top girls in the league for a playoff spot.

“Overall, just a great effort with three players posting scores under 40.”

Laguna scores from the Oct. 8 win over Costa Mesa: Halle Redfearn (37, medalist); MaryKate Quellmalz (39); BellaRose Robinson, (39); Leslie Dwight (42); Anna Kunkel (48); Lindsey Lowell (51).

The Breakers took part Wednesday in the OCL Cluster and Individuals Tournament. Results weren’t available at press time. League individual finals are next Monday .
