High School Roundup: CdM wrestling advances to third consecutive CIF finals appearance
The Corona del Mar High School boys’ wrestling team will get a shot at redemption Wednesday, as the Sea Kings have earned a rematch with Western in the final of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 dual meet championships.
Second-seeded Corona del Mar defeated Pomona 72-6, Menifee Heritage 72-12 and then Thousand Oaks 55-18 in the semifinals on Saturday at Western High School, sending the Sea Kings back to a section final for a third year in a row.
Western topped CdM 40-21 in the Division 6 final last season on its home mat, and the top-seeded Pioneers will host the Sea Kings in the championship match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Newport Harbor also reached the Division 6 semifinals, before falling to Western 43-23. To reach that stage of the tournament, the Sailors defeated Menifee Santa Rosa Academy 48-36 and Newbury Park 40-36.
Costa Mesa, which competed in the Division 2 bracket, dropped its first-round match to Menifee Paloma Valley 59-23 on Saturday at Villa Park High School.
Thomas Lund (heavyweight) posted a pin for the Mustangs, while Dane Curran (120 pounds) won his match by technical fall.
GIRLS’ WRESTLING
Marina, the No. 2 seed in the CIF dual meet wrestling championships, was upset by Corona 42-39 in the semifinals on Saturday at La Verne Bonita High School.
The Vikings had a first-round bye, before notching wins over Norwalk 73-6 and then El Toro 72-6 in the quarterfinals.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Fountain Valley 54, Los Alamitos 50: Margaret Tengan’s 27 points paced the Barons, who completed a home-and-home sweep of the Griffins on Saturday in a Surf League game at Fountain Valley High School.
Audrey Tengan added 12 points for Fountain Valley (16-5, 3-0 in the Surf League), which plays host to Corona del Mar (13-9, 3-0) on Monday at 7 p.m. in the first of two meetings between the teams in the final week of the regular season.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Ocean View 78, Westminster 60: Chico Lopez scored 33 points to lead the Seahawks in Friday’s Golden West League road game.
Peyton Guerrero added 15 points for Ocean View (14-8, 4-2). Ethan Mayfield scored 12 points.
The Seahawks play at Godinez on Monday.
Corona del Mar 66, Huntington Beach 35: Dylan Rogers led the Sea Kings with 13 points in Friday’s Wave League game at Corona del Mar High.
Sanjay Tewari scored 10 points for CdM (20-5, 2-2), which is in third place with two league games left, a game behind both Fountain Valley and Marina.
Luke Kumaric and Brody Thralls each scored seven points for Huntington Beach (6-19, 0-4).
CdM plays at Fountain Valley on Tuesday, while Huntington Beach hosts Marina.
Edison 68, Laguna Beach 53: The visiting Chargers won their 17th straight game in Friday night’s Surf League matchup.
First-place Edison improved to 22-3 overall, 4-0 in league, while Laguna Beach fell to 11-12 overall and 0-4 in league.
Los Alamitos 56, Newport Harbor 29: The Sailors were routed in Friday’s Surf League road game.
Newport Harbor fell to 15-10 overall, and 1-3 in league. The Sailors are in third place in the four-team league.
Newport Harbor plays at Edison on Tuesday.
Saddleback 67, Estancia 58: The Eagles dropped to 16-9 overall and 3-4 in Orange Coast League play after Friday’s home loss.
Pacifica Christian Orange County 82, Riverside Notre Dame 41: Parker Strauss and Salim Semaan each had 15 points for the Tritons in Friday’s nonleague win at home.
Logan Stewart had 14 rebounds for Pacifica Christian (11-12).
BOYS’ SOCCER
Los Alamitos 2, Corona del Mar 1: Tommy Cianfrani scored a goal assisted by Brock Paz on Friday in a Surf League match on the road.
Matt Wood made three saves for CdM (9-5, 1-3), which plays at Edison (8-6-3, 3-1) on Monday at 5 p.m.
Edison 1, Fountain Valley 0 (2OT): Grayson Marquez scored in the second overtime to lift the Chargers over the Barons on Friday in a Surf League match.
Miller Combs drew the assist on the decider.
