Back Bay rivals split first track meet at new CdM facility
Crosstown rivals Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor split the first track and field meet on the new facility at CdM on Wednesday.
The CdM girls earned a 68-62 win, behind three event victories from Caroline Glessing, who finished first in the 100-meter sprints (12.68 seconds), the 200 (26.08) and the long jump (16 feet, 11½ inches).
Ellie Rosing also claimed two races on the track in winning the 800 (2:30.48) and the 1,600 (5:23.55), and Shannon Strassman took the pole vault competition with a clearance of 10-6.
Newport Harbor’s Nicolette Blanchard won the 100 high hurdles in 18 seconds flat, besting teammate Presley Burnham by four-hundredths of a second. Burnham turned the tables on Blanchard in the 300 intermediate hurdles to win that event.
Newport Harbor posted a more comfortable victory on the boys’ side, winning by a margin of 67-51.
Chett Clark and Tim Cislaw starred for the Sailors. Clark swept the distance races, running 4:41.35 in the 1,600 and 11:10.59 in the 3,200. Cislaw did the same in taking the hurdles – 16.96 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 43.69 seconds in the 300 hurdles.
Jason Plumb earned 18 team points for CdM with victories in the 200 (23.61), the high jump (5-10) and the long jump (20-9), as well as a second-place finish in the 400 to Newport Harbor’s Carson Bauers, who won the race in 51.36 seconds.
