The Crowd: Sea of events fills spring 2022 social calendar
O.C. Supervisor Katrina Foley this spring produced the inaugural “Women Making a Difference” confab recognizing the accomplishments of a diverse community of women from all pursuits and endeavors across the spectrum of O.C. life. Some 200 guests lauded 62 nominees, bestowing awards on 12 exceptional women at a luncheon event held at Bowers Museum in Santa Ana.
The honorees came from sectors of the community including the arts, business, community services, education, health, judicial, labor, military, philanthropy, and public safety including police, fire and more. Accepting honors were: Diana Farrell (arts), Claudia Keller (community service), Carol Crane (education), Karin Reed, MD (health), Judge Maria Hernandez (judicial), Gloria Alvarado (labor), Alexis Federico (military service), Janet Ray (philanthropy), Brenda Emmick (public safety fire), Christina Strunk (public safety police) and Angie Nguyen (public services industry).
From leaders of today to leaders of tomorrow
National Charity League, Jrs. Newport Beach, recently presented its 34th annual spring luncheon, fashion show and auction raising funds for deserving local nonprofits including the High Hopes Head Injury Program, Harry and Grace Steele Children’s Center and the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. The gathering, attracting several hundred mothers and daughters, was held at the Balboa Bay Resort, Newport Beach.
The event was chaired by Jessica Wohl, Corre Larkin and Emily Irwin. NCL Jrs. president Lauren Franke with daughter Hadley welcomed Erika and Chloe Carson, Laura and Stella Vanderhook, Jenn and Abbey Krogh, and Cameron, Dylan and Hadley Davis, among the many dedicated families in attendance.
“The mission of National Charity League is to foster mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experience,” offers Jennifer Johnson with NCL Jrs.
Keep the music playing
The Newport Harbor Yacht Club welcomed the devotees of Hutchins Consort for its annual spring gala themed “Sea Shanties and Scalawags.”
The consort is a unique ensemble of acoustically matched violins led by accomplished musician Joe McNalley.
This season’s concert performance featured vocalist “Spoo,” lead singer for the group, the Pirates Charles. Appropriately, the program centered on pirate-themed numbers including “10,000 Miles Away,” “The Five Gallon Jar” and “Popeye Was A Rollin’ Stone.”
In the lively crowd were Hutchins Consort founder Sharon McNalley, Sienna and Lauren Burns, Mathias and Charista Schar, Joyce and Mike Clary, RuthAnn and Robert Burns, Barbara Woods, Jerry Harrington, Julie Jenkins and Jan Landstrom.
Gents on the catwalk
The Heart of Jesus Retreat Center in Santa Ana produced its long-running and very popular spring event known countywide as the Gentleman’s Haberdashery on April 28 at Balboa Bay Resort, Newport Beach. With some 400 in attendance, the crowd applauded with great enthusiasm as the lineup of handsome gents showed off the latest in bespoke fashions for the well-dressed man.

“After a two-year hiatus, the 40th-annual Gentlemen’s Haberdashery took on extra special meaning as we gathered to honor and celebrate the legacy of this event,” said Tony Moiso, honorary co-chair of the Gentlemen’s Haberdashery and chairman and CEO of Rancho Mission Viejo.
“It was inspiring to see such a generous and philanthropic group of leaders and members of our community come together with a common goal to give thousands of children in Orange County and Southern California the gift of laughter, prayer and learning at the Heart of Jesus Retreat Center.”
By the conclusion of the event an impressive half-million dollars were raised to support the programs offered at the center.
