Motorcyclist dies in collision with SUV

A motorcyclist died Friday after colliding with an SUV in Fountain Valley, authorities said.

Hovig Akmakjian, 22, of Santa Ana was ejected from his motorcycle when it struck the truck around 6 p.m. at Slater and Magnolia avenues, Fountain Valley police said.

They added that the driver of the SUV was making a left turn onto Magnolia from Slater when the motorcyclist was heading west on Slater.

Witnesses told officers that they saw Akmakjian running a red light at the intersection at the time of the accident, according to a police press release.

Charges were not filed against the driver, Sgt. Tony Luce said.

Paramedics transported Akmakjian to UCI Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Based on a preliminary investigation, alcohol or drugs were not factors in the collision, police said.
