Volunteers needed for monthly park restoration

A group of volunteers are seeking help Sunday for a monthly restoration program for Talbert Regional Park in Costa Mesa.
The effort, created by Costa Mesa residents Cindy Black and Debby Koken, for the county-run park goes from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s planned to take place the first Sunday of each month.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the end of West 19th Street where it meets Balboa Boulevard in Newport Beach. To reserve a spot for this week, call Koken at (949) 574-0333.
In the summer, volunteers will remove nonnative vegetation that has “over-powered” the native species, said Sue Stoffel, an operations manager with the county parks system.
By the fall, the effort is planned to involve replanting areas with native species that are better for the area’s wildlife, Stoffel said.
Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and bring sunscreen, water and a hat.
